Nessie - European Legless Lizard

It’s not often you see an animal quite like Nessie. While at first glance, she looks like a snake, she is actually a species of legless lizard! Also known as the Scheltopusik, or Glass Lizards, these animals are truly one of a kind, and the largest species of legless lizard on the planet!

Nessie - European Legless Lizard

Nessie came to the sanctuary in October of 2024 when a nearby zoo announced the closing of it’s doors. We had always known that a legless lizard would make a great ambassador animal, but we weren’t expecting one! These animals aren’t common to see so it was a shock to us!

Nessie is named because of her love for insects and her ability to hold her body up and look like the Loch Ness Monster coming out of the soil. She is a very quirky gal and she shows it with everything she does. Her weird body structure makes her a great ambassador to teach about the difference between lizards and snakes.

If you love taxonomy and the classification of animals and want to support an animal that is a living example of how confusing it can be, Nessie is a perfect ambassador for you! If instead you love quirky animals and a knack for food, she may still be a great fit!
